Breast Cancer

In 2015, there were over 200,000 new cases of Breast Cancer in the United States or another way of stating it is there are 124.8 new cases per 100,000 women per year (National Cancer Institute, 2015).  With current treatment plans there is a 89.4% chance of surviving 5 years (National Cancer Institute, 2015).  Below is the link to the National Cancer Institute website with general information on Breast Cancer.

Approximately 12% of women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and those that inherit a BRCA1 mutation have a 55-65% chance and those that inherit a BRCA2 mutation have a 45% chance of developing breast cancer by the age of 70 (National Cancer Institute, 2015). Below is more information on common questions of BRAC cancer risk and genetic testing.

As with any disease or disorder it is helpful to have support of those that are going through the same issues. Listed below is a link to an online support group (Cancer Support Community and American Cancer Society) as well as how to find local support groups (Susan G. Komen Social Support) in addition to a blog (Bad Right Breast) written by my cousin detailing her journey.

This page is in celebration of my mom a 16-year survivor, my cousin a 3-year survivor, and my Great Aunt Ana.
